Backpacking is a fun and exciting form of low-cost, independent travel that often involves staying at inexpensive lodgings and carrying your necessities on your back. Some backpackers explore the forests, and some backpackers explore European cities. Either way, backpackers find inexpensive ways to enjoy the better things in life.
The biggest mountain to climb when it comes to backpacking is bringing the correct number of items that can last you the entirety of your journey. Since Europe is known for having some of the most fashionable people in the world, it can be nerve-racking to pack functional and stylish clothing so that you blend in with the locals. If you’re struggling to pack for your next journey, here’s how to pack for a backpacking Europe trip.
T-Shirts
When packing, you should always start with the basics. You want to mix and match three to four T-shirts in different colors. You want these colors to be neutral and versatile with other bottoms or jackets. Add two “dressy” shirts in case you have a fancier night out and two to three long-sleeved shirts in case it gets cooler.
Quick Tip: Bring some layers since Europe’s weather constantly changes. Bring a light jacket or a cardigan to help you stay warm in cooler climates.
Socks
Invest in breathable socks for your travels. You will thank yourself for investing in comfortable and breathable socks. You don’t want to go back to your lodging area and smell the stench of sweaty feet all night. Keep your feet healthy and get a pair of travel socks.
Shoes
The shoes you bring on your backpacking journey should be comfortable and durable. Since shoes take up a lot of space in your bag, we recommend getting two pairs of shoes. One pair can be sneakers and the other sandals, or you can bring two pairs of sneakers—either way, you need a sturdy and fashionable pair of sneakers. Don’t waste your money or time buying new shoes for this journey! New shoes can cause blisters and be uncomfortable. Instead, bring an older pair of sneakers and learn how to care for them properly.
Underwear
We recommend packing six pairs of breathable underwear. You will be uncomfortable for your entire trip if you pack uncomfortable underwear. To prevent that, invest in good pairs of travel underwear that you can wash and dry after a long day.
Bottoms
Your choice of bottoms depends on what time of year you visit Europe. However, you should bring comfortable but fashionable bottoms no matter the weather. Bring a sturdy pair of jeans that can go with just about anything. Bring one or two pairs of shorts if you’re visiting during the warmer months. If you’re visiting during the fall or winter, you should bring thicker jeans and wool leggings.
