Micaela Pavoncello is an art historian, entrepreneur and licensed tour guide from the Jewish community of Rome .
She is a Roman Jew who actually takes viewers on an incredible and passionate storytelling journey about her people – the Jews of Rome.
In this interview, founder of Jewish Roma Walking Tours shares with me some of the highlights of her New summer 2021 virtual walking tour.
“During lockdown 2020 you decided to arrange live zoom tours of the Jewish Ghetto. What were some of the pros and cons about doing a live virtual tour?”
Micaela Pavoncello:
While participating in many zoom classes with my children and their teachers, I began to arrange a virtual live tour of Jewish Rome. I reached out to many North American Jewish communities who wanted to learn about twenty-two centuries of Jewish life in Rome from a Roman Jew. It has been a fun and engaging experience. I love it!
“Your tours are about the Jewish history in Rome and what it is like to be a Roman Jew. They are designed to provide those who serve their Jewish communities of what it means to be Jewish, as well as pragmatic insights on how to tell your story and to lead effectively from a Jewish perspective. Can you share some specifics?”
Micaela Pavoncello:
Romans Jews are not Ashkenazi (Jews from Northern and Eastern Europe) or Sephardic (Jews from the Iberian Peninsula). Rather, they came straight from the Holy Land. The Jews of Rome do not speak Yiddish or Ladino. They spoke a Judeo-Roman dialect during their daily life in the Ghetto.

“Your new summer 2021 virtual tour goes a little in depth about the Jews in ancient Rome. Can you share with me a brief description?”
Micaela Pavoncello:
The Roman empire was responsible for the destruction of Jerusalem. The spoils from the Temple financed the greatest stone amphitheater in architectural history, the Colosseum.
The Jewish community of Rome has had a longer continuous existence than any other community of Europe. Jews have lived in the eternal city for more than two thousand years—and yet, no thorough study has ever been undertaken. Most tourists, including scholars are not aware of this!
While learning about ancient Rome in relation to the Jewish people, we will consider and discuss the Diaspora, Judah Maccabee, Josephus, Julius Caesar, Agustus, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian.
I also discuss the emergence of Rabbinic Judaism in the Greco-Roman Empire. We will experience the ancient past in the present tense. In addition, it is of great significance, if you are Jewish, to be illumined by our emphasis on the Arch of Titus where we will pause to reflect How are we to continue to serve G-d. while being Jewish, without the Bet-Hamikadish and its service?
