We are only days away from the New Year and everyone is definitely looking forward to 2021.
The reason is simple: 2020 handed us lemons, and this January 1st will symbolize a fresh start for all of us who have been negatively impacted by the world’s worst pandemic in over a century.
This column for me is unique and extra-special: I am penning this on my laptop as I sip on Caribbean-themed coffee from the same suite where The Finale for The Bachelor (Season 11) was filmed at Jade Mountain St Lucia.
Since the pandemic hit, I have only had the chance to enjoy limited travel within Canada, and even launched my own TV show – What’s On Your Post-Pandemic Bucket List? – so venturing off to a tropical international destination has lifted up my spirits up in a huge way.
The sea, sun, warm air, tropical drinks, blue sky, sandy beaches are just what I need to close out 2020 with a bang. That’s right, when you hand me lemons, I don’t make lemonade: I get innovative and find solutions… Reinvention is my forte.
What will travel look like in 2021?
Travel may not be on the cards for most of us right now, but in the future, it will boom! All of us have been so desperate to travel over the past “year that shall never be named” and we are just itching to get away.
However, everyone now is asking the same question: what does the future of travel look like?
Let’s start with the fact that travel is going to be busy once the world gets back normal (well a new normal that is), and travelers of the near future are going to be searching for different kinds of destinations than they did in the past.
Travelers will be searching for locations that had smaller COVID-19 cases and they will closely look at how countries handled the pandemic. So, the countries with the better points will win big of course.
The reason I came to St Lucia is because they totally crushed the curve! Their safety record for COVID-19 cases is just amazing, and throughout this entire pandemic the numbers have been in the low hundreds. Yes, this impressive and I feel safer here than at home.
There are a many safety protocols in place that you need to be aware of and when you decide to travel it certainly will look a little different, but still will be really enjoyable.
Post-Pandemic Travel: Plan, follow the rules, and be patient
Based on my trip to St. Lucia, travel will involve a more lengthy and detailed process, as new safety protocols will be always be strictly enforced.
You need to plan ahead and fill out a bit of paperwork, which you submit to the island, as well as have a COVID test done within 72 hours of travel.
My flight was direct from Toronto Pearson International Airport and direct flights will be high on people’s wish list: one flight means less airports, less people, and safer travel. I experienced fewer touch points and in between flights on the island the crews thoroughly fogged and disinfected the plane before the next passengers boarded.
Many other places are just starting to open up slowly after major preventative lockdowns crushed COVID-19 numbers. These locales include Antigua, Barbados Bermuda, Turks and Caicos, and Grenada. Further afield places including South Africa- my favourite, Kenya, Tanzania and the Maldives.
Next, people will want to travel in the safety of their bubbles; either as a family, or their close circle, so places that offer private villas and your own spaces are very high on the list of desires.

Visit their website: pricing from as low as $250 a night.
I am highly recommending that everyone who wants to travel to book now and search for deals on websites for your next destination. Also, make sure you work with a travel agent as they will know all the ‘ins and outs’ on rules, guidelines, and travel specials.
Take a look on places like Trip Advisor and other apps that may offer suggestions, but also try to do a bit of research first, then call your travel agent to book as they can get the same deal but offer more security in your booking if you have to change or have any problems.
Travel in 2021: What does my crystal ball say about the future of travel?
Yes, in a perfect world it would be awesome to have a crystal ball. However, one thing is certain: lots of positive changes are being made in the travel industry that will help keep everyone safe.
With vaccines being rolled out and with rapid testing at more airports across Canada, we certainly are seeing travel searched for more. People will want to make up for lost time – like me, who miss family overseas and are waiting for the vaccine so they can travel to see them.
Travel in smaller groups will be popular too. People feel safer if there is a leader who can be there to help in a time of need. A case in point is my groups with Massimo Capra: when I lead them personally, I take people to the doctor, find medications for them, and change their plans if necessary. Safety and security – that’s what travellers will want moving forward.
Those who like ocean cruises are now searching for smaller river cruises that stay in a country, so they won’t be stuck onboard out at sea.
People will also start travelling more to open outdoor places, like the rural countryside of Ireland, or the private islands in the Maldives. Overcrowding will be out, and space, outdoors, nature and rural experiential travel will be a big thing.
Book with a travel agent: They are here to help all travellers
Travel agents have certainly proven their worth during this pandemic in helping people change plans and even getting people home at the beginning. They know the best deals and the latest trends, so please book with a travel agent.
If you are considering travel in 2021 and need advice, again contact a travel agent, or you can reach out to me as I am always pleased to offer the best advice.
Book now as prices for travel are low. When the floodgates open and the travel industry booms, prices will only go up in a big way (our industry is based on the supply and demand model).
Dust off that credit card and get ready to have fun in the New Year.
We all deserve a fun trip – or make it a few next year – as we bid farewell to 2020.
