Finally – upward movement for the travel industry. Literally!
This afternoon, the Alberta Government and the Government of Canada announced a pilot program that will drastically reduce the 14-day quarantine period, and I couldn’t be happier!
That’s right, the initiative will be run at the Calgary International Airport (YYC) and will officially launch on November 2, 2020, so that Albertans and eligible travellers from non-stop international destinations may only be required to quarantine for as little as two days.
This means that on arrival at YYC, or the Coutts land border crossing between Alberta and the USA, you can take part in the program and quarantine will only be required until a negative test result is delivered, therefore clipping back isolation time in a big way.
Additionally, travellers who test negative will be allowed to leave their place of quarantine, however, they are still required to get a second test done on day six or seven after arrival, which can be done in a jiffy at a community pharmacy that’s participating in the pilot program – there will be lots of them too.
YYC is Canada’s first airport to have government approved COVID-19 testing for international passengers
I have to say, the news of this new pilot program is like music to my ears, and yes, I also love the smell of jet fuel…. It’s my aphrodisiac (LOL).
Calgary is the first and only airport in Canada to soon have government-approved testing for arriving passengers, and the initiative is a lifeline to the airport and to the travel industry as a whole – we need to kickstart the travel industry and this is the right way to do it.
We all know how hard the travel industry has been hit since the pandemic took its grip on Canada and the rest of the world.
The $1.5-trillion-dollar global tourism industry is taking a beating and now we are witnessing leadership at its best, thanks to Alberta, the Government of Canada, and I also want to highlight the great efforts of the Calgary Airport Authority.
YYC is like any other major airport at home or abroad: airports have seen a dramatic decrease in passengers, which is ruining our industry.
However, there is lots of hope for the better now. Canada and the world will be all eyes on Calgary as this is the first step to support the safe and healthy recovery of air travel.

At present, a number of rapid-testing programs are underway at airports around the world, so it’s great to see support for our industry and how innovation is leading the way.
Let’s get the travel industry restarted – now!
YYC, Alberta, and the Canadian Government approving this science-based testing pilot is news worth celebrating.
Just ask WestJet, a major airline that runs most of its fleet from Calgary.
Here is what Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO, had to say following today’s big announcement.
“This announcement is welcomed by WestJet and I applaud and thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Jason Kenney for taking this important step in providing peace of mind to anxious travellers,” explains Sims.
He adds, “We have been asking for a science-based approach based on multiple layers of testing to help safely ease the quarantine requirements. With our home and largest hub in Calgary, guests from the province will be the first to experience this important trial as an alternative to a 14-day quarantine.”
Bob Sartor, President & CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, echoes his view.
“YYC Calgary International Airport is proud to be the first and only airport in Canada to have a government-approved testing pilot for arriving international passengers—which we hope will lead to reducing and one day eliminating the current 14-day self-isolation requirements. This innovative testing is the lifeline our airport and airline partners need to instill confidence in air travel,” says Sartor.
“Today’s announcement brings hope for a brighter tomorrow. A new era of travel is upon us, and all of us here at The Calgary Airport Authority look forward to helping pave the way forward,” he adds.
This is great news for Calgary, and I can’t wait until this is rolled out at Toronto Pearson International Airport so we can all get flying internationally again.
