Susan McKechnie, Candidate for Hamilton City Council-Ward 15, is giving voters the scoop on the new report completed by the City of Hamilton Audit Services.
The watchdog committee completed a report on the use of external consultants and the findings are shocking.
A widespread lack of checks and controls is revealed in the detailed audit. Council must be called on to account for why they approved over $40M in consultants’ fees. The councillors who are supposed to be the stewards for their tax dollars must explain widespread mismanagement and lack of oversight to constituents.
According to a recent audit that will be on the Wednesday, June 13 agenda at City Council, “the use of consultants was widespread across many departments” and Audit Services “identified a lack of corporate governance over the hiring and management of consultants including business cases, significant cost coding errors, unbudgeted expenditures, cost overruns, project changes, delays, large contingencies and non-value added activities that do not demonstrate effective and efficient management practices.”
Ward 15 councillor Judi Partridge, a recent candidate for Liberal MPP, who has served on council for two terms, is quoted as saying, “It is time for some accountability.” Residents are asking where the accountability has been for the last eight years.
Another long-term councilor states in an interview with the CBC that “staff spends money on consultants that councillors never hear about.” How is this possible?
The report has made 12 recommendations that taxpayers can only hope will be adopted. Exercising fiscal responsibility and oversight is the role of City Council.

Voters will have the opportunity on October 22 to elect a council that is transparent and accountable. It is time for taxpayers to elect people to council who will be responsible for our tax dollars. Politicians must understand that they can no longer deflect responsibility for the fiscal mismanagement that is occurring in Hamilton.
