More than a month after billionaires Barry and Honey Sherman were found dead in their upscale Toronto home, police say the couple were victims of a double homicide.
The bodies of the Apotex founder, 75, and his wife, 70, were discovered Dec. 15 around 11:45 a.m. in the indoor pool area of their $6.9-million Old Colony Rd. mansion.
Police at the time said they died from “ligature neck compression” and called the deaths suspicious.
Homicide Det.-Sgt. Susan Gomes said Friday that the couple were found hanging by belts from a poolside railing in a semi-seated position. They were clothed.
“I believe they were targeted,” Gomes said.
The couple were last seen alive in the evening hours of Dec. 13 and did not communicate with friends and family in the time before their bodies were found. There were no signs of forced entry to the home.
Police did not discuss any suspects.
After the press conference, the Sherman family released a statement:
“The announcement by the Toronto Police Service that the tragic deaths of their parents are being investigated as a double homicide was anticipated by the Sherman family.
“This conclusion was expressed by the family from the outset and is consistent with the findings of the independent autopsy and investigation.
“The family continues to support the Toronto Police Service in their efforts to seek justice for their parents and pursue those responsible for these unspeakable crimes.”

A team of investigators with Thomas Klatt, who was hired by the Sherman family, then began their probe of the home.
A private security company hired to secure the Sherman house has put up their own tape to replace the police tape. They expect to be in the house for weeks.
The Sherman family has been told by Klatt’s team to not go to the house. Klatt will conduct his own forensic investigation of the scene and ask for or go to court to access Toronto Police’s final report.
Former Toronto detective Martin Woodhouse, a Klatt investigator, was seen at the mansion but did not talk.
