The Weather Network’s chief meteorologist has some potentially bad news for more winter-averse Ontarians and Canadians this coming winter — lots of snow.
“It’s safe to say we’ll all be participating in winter this year,” said chief weather prognosticator Chris Scott in an article on the Weather Network website. “As a whole, Canadians should expect a wild ride from start to finish.”
The network is pointing to a developing La Niña, which the agency says will “help define the season.”
According to meteorologist and science writer Scott Sutherland, a La Niña cycle occurs when:
“Once in awhile — especially when you have a particularly strong El Niño — as the pattern finally breaks down, Rossby waves can continue to propagate back and forth across the ocean well after the El Niño is done. This keeps pushing the system in the direction of ‘normal’ which results in a kind of ‘hypernormal’ state,” describes Sutherland on The Weather Network website.
“This situation, with stronger than normal westerly winds pushing warm surface waters even farther to the west than usual, thus causing an even stronger and wider upwelling of cold water in the east, is known as a La Niña,” he added.
So what does this mean for Halton Region and the rest of southern Ontario?
Scott and The Weather Network are calling for a “classic” Canadian winter for the region, with above-average snowfall and a heightened threat for freezing rain at times.
“A stormy weather pattern could bring the Greater Toronto Area its snowiest winter in a decade. In fact, it is interest (sic) to note that there are some similarities in the global weather pattern between this year and the winter of 2007-2008, which brought Pearson airport its snowiest winter on record,” he said.
The forecast does include a bright spot, though. While generally colder temperatures are expected in more northern parts of the province, southern areas could expect extended periods of milder weather mid-winter.
