By Paul Fitzgerald – Hearing the word cancer is a life-changing moment for anyone, and when you are 14 years-old it’s all the more devastating.
This is why Clinton Howell, a popular real estate agent for Re/Max Escarpment Realty Inc., Brokerage, and a very well-known philanthropist in Burlington and across Halton, has joined a massive campaign to support a young boy in Cayuga who has just been diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, which is cancer of the blood.
Callum’s rare form of cancer is caused when a cell’s genetic code changes and creates an abnormality known as the Philadelphia chromosome. This signals cells to multiply out of control and the white cells build up on the spleen. It is rare in children, accounting for just 5 percent of all childhood leukemia.
His mother, Ann Hanley, recalls that moment when her son was diagnosed. “That moment will forever stay with me,” she says. “The unimaginable just became a reality. My son has cancer with no cure.”
While his future is very uncertain, Ann is grateful there is treatment through drug therapy that controls and normalizes the cells of the spleen; the cost though is astronomical – it’s over $9,00.00 per month. While Ann may qualify for assistance from the Ontario Trillium Drug Plan, the portion she has to pay for the drug therapy, along with weekly travel to McMaster University and other appointments with specialists at a plethora of locations throughout southern Ontario, will still be very hefty.
This is why Ann is hosting a big fundraiser this Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Cayuga Legion from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM. The event will include a silent auction, games, and draws and all the funds from the event will go directly to Callum’s drug therapy and travel costs. There will also be a 50/50 draw. Tickets for the event are $10.00 each, and there are droves of business leaders and organizations joining together to support Callum.
Howell will be donating a specially-made selection of high quality essential oils and a nebulizing diffuser valued at over $200.00.
“I have two children and I could not imagine what Ann and her son are going through right now,” says Howell.

I know that my efforts, along with everyone’s support, will help Callum lead a normal life. I know Callum is a normal, active, comical and inquisitive, fun loving boy who enjoys playing hockey, and it means so much to me to help him and his family out.”
Ann is grateful for the support from Howell and business leaders and organizations from a number of communities in the area.
“We have no choice but to fight this,” says Ann. “We’ve had some bad days, but it could be worse. It’s kind of expensive, but at least he can live.”
Howell adds, “I admire Ann and her son for being strong. Their positive attitude will take them far and I am sure they are thrilled to know that they have friends who are fighting along with them.”
