“During the season of rebirth, you will discover that unhappiness is the hunger pain for change: it is the first sign that something powerful is stirring within you. Whereas the old way of approaching experience allowed you to remain hidden, you must peel away the layers that hide your real nature. Being self-actualized and spontaneously yourself is the only way that you can remain connected to life. When civilization held mysticism and religion above reason, the world grew dark. Turning back to appreciate nature, they circumnavigated the globe, and discovered that the world was indeed, round. The Great Turning always creates balance. The Master said: “The One unites the duality of Two.” Beyond the two, is the image of any unnatural condition, and a lack of balance that generates the turning. When you separate yourself from life, you create two ways of viewing the world. “This is who I really am, but that is what the world expects me to be.” Somewhere in the middle of ‘this’ and ‘that’, your real life has taken on a protective covering. To prepare for your revolution, shed your protective skin. You will discover that this is the person you were meant to be and you must cherish bringing it forward.” Kari Hohne
I struggle with this concept on the daily, as I’m sure many others do. There is a ‘me’ , my persona, that the world has come accustomed to, likely as a result of a precedent I set at some point, and then there is the real authentic me which is rarely displayed publicly. The two are quite contrasting in nature; the one is fierce and assertive ready to conquer the world while the other is vulnerable and scared in search of refuge and love. Deep within me there is a deep yearning to strike a balance between the two ‘me’s’ but as of yet this has been the most challenging tasks of all. Perhaps this is the revolution that the author is referring to above. If I take her advice then perhaps the protective covering needs to come off. I must leave behind the ‘me’ that the world has come accustomed to in order to give birth to the ‘me’ that I am truly meant to be, as scary and as daunting as that may be.

As I reflect on my own duality, I wonder about all of the people in my life, and my perception of them. Ignorantly, I assume that I know them, that I understand them and have them all figured out, but recognizing that I only present a small percentage of my true authentic self to the world then wouldn’t the same apply to all others? We hurry through our busy life, often rushing from one interaction to the next, never truly recognizing the true nature of the people we encounter and the struggles and triumphs that lie beyond them. Unfortunately, with our busy lifestyles this has become unavoidable; we have become accustomed to judging the book by its cover, never really looking within the text or examining the sub-text. I wonder what amazing jewels we are missing out on as a result. I also wonder what pains, conflicts and catastrophe’s could have been avoided, what triumphs and victories could have been accomplished, how much love and peace could have been generated if we just dug a little deeper, or if we each peeled off a few layers??
