So, while the view from your seat each day may seem mundane, or at times entertaining in its own right, have you ever wondered what the view and experience is from the driver’s seat?
For the first time ever a TTC employee has penned a compelling book that takes readers on a unique journey from the operator’s command centre.
Richard Lee, who is now a supervisor with the TTC, has just unveiled his book: Get Onboard: Walk In The Shoes Of A Transit Operator.
How do commuters view the jobs of TTC operators? Lee sums up the voices of some commuters during an interview: “‘All TTC operators do is just sit and drive, there is nothing hard about it. We pay your salary, just shut up and drive.’”
Lee explains that during his six-year stint as an operator he heard these statements and more by passengers and strangers who spoke against TTC drivers.
“Some people have ridiculed or even scorned TTC operators for being lazy,” says Lee. “Some people take to social media and other outlets to express their displeasing experience with the transit system. I read a tweet once and it said, ‘The TTC is great in Toronto. Said nobody ever.’”

What many people don’t realize is the fact the TTC operators on a daily basis deal with more stuff than what people think. They deal with the pressure of the media, being scrutinized by the public, the potential danger of threats, jumpers in the subway, long shifts, exposure to hundreds of people with hundreds of different personalities, and much more.
The book includes the experiences from former TTC CEO, Adam Giambrone.
Giambrone states in the book: “TTC operators are an under-appreciated vital component to Toronto’s transit system. They literally keep Toronto moving and their stories deserve to be told.”
Lee says that “there is a cry among the transit workers all across the world and TTC operators are no different. Just because TTC operators are public servants doesn’t mean they are servants to the public.”
Anther TTC operator included in the book states: “I don’t think that the public at large knows about all the incidents, the abuse, the mental stresses of this job (operator) and what the operators face on a continual basis.”
Those who read Get Onboard and who travel on the Toronto Transit System will have a greater appreciation for the operators and will no doubt gain a better greater respect for them as human beings.
Yes, it is time for you to Get Onboard and to walk in the shoes of a transit operator.
